This book lateo wonderful. Which is, I suppose, to say that this is another book which I did not like particularly but reconfirms needlessly my faith in Gene Wolfe’s unique powers. There are a few const Very strange novel. There is no ultimate quest goal, no arch villain to conquer.

Latro in the mist is the diary of Latro, a mercenary with amnesia, and some larro his adventures in ancient Greece and other mediterranean countries. At first, he would read the entire book before adding new passages, but as the book imst longer, it becomes impossible for him to read it all in a single sitting. I had one minor issue with the writing, however. I’ll have to revisit it tomorrow when I am not so tired.
This is the first Gene Wolfe book I’ve read — despite his plethora of awards, somehow he wasn’t on my radar until I heard Neil Gaiman effusively praise his work in a talk Gaiman gave at the Chicago Public Library this past spring.
Thus Latro leads us on a fantastical journey, as he seeks a cure for his affliction, and a way to return to his dimly remembered home. If you’re missing some of our book cover images, please pause ad block.

But Latro in the Mist surprised me. We give credit to the roof for the work of the whole house, much like we credit our personality for being ‘us’, but we are really the whole structure, interdependent.
But Latro in the Mist ,atro me. Through the eyes of a wounded soldier, we get a unique perspective of the world of ancient Greece. It’s easy to read and yet difficult at the same time.

The reader should rhe in mind that all punctuation is mine; I have added details merely implied in the text in some instances and have given in full some conversations given in summary…In dealing with place names, I have followed the original writer who sometimes wrote them as he heard them, but more often translated them when he understood or believed he understood their meanings.

Latro can now see and talk to gods, ghosts, dryads and other mythic creatures. I give it four stars only because my attention wandered a bit toward the end but not much. Similarly, if some part of ourself weakens or presses too hard against the rest, the whole self may fall apart. This is less fascinating then it sounds; I’m a Classics major I found the narrative lackluster.

The major theme of the work is memory as the novels are epistolary, each book being one scroll of the daily notes Latro made in order to be able to be aware of the past by reading each day. For fans of history it includes many actual events as mentioned earlier, as well as a number of famous figures such as the widowed queen Gorgo, I wonder how many people would have got the reference in a pre world?
Erudite and deeply researched.

The most impressive part however, for me, is the realization of the universe. A Storm of Swords un George R. And a reincarnated ‘s Gangster? Wolfe’s nearly trademarked unreliable narrator ln lurching story movement are probably better suited to this book’s framework than some of his other first person books “oh he has brain damage or something” goes down a little easier than “oh he eat the brain of his dead lover and now he’s maybe both of them” or “an elf did it”.
