Now, I’m not saying that everything has to be explained–I lae care that some animals talk, a: Like Prue, Curtis is a “half-breed” who has a dual nature that allows him to enter Se Wood, but the exact nature of this connection not revealed in Wildwoodother than Curtis speculating that he has a strange reclusive aunt, and a number of odd relatives.
There is nothing right about this book. Mar 10, Lily rated it did not like it Recommends it for: I am going to wait until my wildwod has the rest of the trilogy befor Prue’s baby brother Mac has been spirited away by Crows into the Impassable wilderness of Wildwood.
Meloy is obviously a reader, and likely loved these sorts of stories as a boy and wanted to create one of his own for children of a new generation to enjoy.

Johns Bridge does appear briefly, as the Ghost Bridge, conjured by a rune magic spell. Pratchett’s writing style was in the same great British tradition as that of Lewis, and Tiffany Aching is one of the finest heroines YA offers.

Meloy thinks these are character traits. I really liked the concept here: The biggest issue with this for me was the fact that I saw everything coming, it was so predictable.

I sometimes wonder myself why the book is recommended for children, but still, I think almost anyone can enjoy it.

I really feel like this cronlcas a book that needed to undergo at least one more major rewrite before it was published, and I’m sad that it didn’t, because I think it could have been much, much better. In a question and answer session with Meloy and Ellis, a young reader suggested the Ghost Bridge could be interpreted as an apparition of a bridge that once existed in the past, implying that Wildwood takes place in our world’s future.
Want to Read saving…. Seriously, apparently we needed to establish that 12 year old Prue rides a single speed bike and cruises the new used bins at the record store- very important for aesthetic. I don’t think most kids will read this–at least not all the way through.
The overall familiar yet unique feel of this novel felt like I was coming home to a childhood favorite, but discovering something new along the way.
