Has a grim, raw style. This book reminded me a little bit of Kill Bill. Reflections – Volume 1 Hardcover Today! This was a decent graphic novel that reminded me a lot of the Kill Bill movies. Because of the trauma of her formative years, the scars on Ukiko’s face are reflected in her psyche, and the storyline partially functions as an extended Lacanian mirror-stage, depicting Ukiko’s mis apprehension of self.
The end result is that you don’t engage with the characters much.

Almost like a mix of Asians and Russians. Metamorphosis is testament that the Kabuki series is more than just a graphic davkd — it is equal parts academia, art, experiment, poe this volume took a lot longer to finish than I originally thought it would. In a later episode, Ukiko is shown cards with Rorschach inkblots.
Here in Volume 4; Skin Deep we finally return to the heroine of the title. The miniseries, Kabuki: My favorite collected volume from the series, though I expect only until The Alchemy gets its own book.

He’s found not just success, but accolades and acclaim for his multimedia comic book art, gallery art, comics writing and even children’s books.

He can morph like a chameleon from cartoonish renderings to realist representational paintings to pencil sketches.

Mack capitalizes on this exoticism by combining it with the already alien culture of Japan. Of course, if you know anything about Mack, you know he has some of the best and most unique art in comics and this is true even in black and white.

It is possible play with fantasy, action, sci fi, and horror genre conventions, but still have stories and characters that feel real and adult, but their work really teeters on the edge for me.
The “circle of blood” that is Kabuki’s life is compared to the halo of an angel; this “bloody halo” is compared to the Japanese flag; the flag is compared to a costume Kabuki wears for much of the story, showing her status as a symbol of Japan, a symbol davie divinity, and a symbol of bloody vengeance. Wish I would have read this ten years ago.
