German literature is a great unknown territory for me, but I recently enjoyed an Irmgard Keun novel and very much liked Buddenbrooks.

They may seem too cerebral because of the change from a powerful modern German into an awkward English. All the thousand thousandths of a second of liking, desire, aversion, calm, agitation that one passes through — what can be deduced from them?
