And I think that different cultures have different tolerances for how the first-person is handled—all based on literary tradition and current publishing trends. Their meetings are often fortuitous, running into one another on the street whilst going about their own personal business — but every chance encounter leads to drinking and dining together.

Want to Read saving…. Not only the difference between our age in years, nor even the expanse between where each of us stood at that moment, but rather kawwkami sheer distance that existed between us. Tsukiko is an average storyteller, but she still manages to charm the reader with her unembellished account of a relationship she cherished.

She lives an empty life, bereft of meaningful relationships and has even deliberately distanced herself from her family who happens to live in the same neighbourhood as her. Rarely have I seen a novel of such psychological acuity, and the emotions it evokes, especially toward the character of Sensei, are strong and empathetic. I can’t say I fully grokked their experience, described in the blurb as “old-fashioned romance”, but it was still interesting to try.
