Penthesilea by Heinrich von Kleist

An interesting play about the amazons during the Greek and Trojan war. They turn up and begin to fight both sides without explanation. Then, it turns out, they are hunting mates. It resembles a superhero movie with much action and violence. The attraction between Penthesilea and Achilles is fascinating, but I would have like to know more about it. It felt a little rushed. It wasn’t performed until 65 years after Kleist’s death, in Dec 28, Mjf rated it it was amazing. Arguably the best German drama ever written — although, as in Goethe’s famous remark, not written for a stage or at least not the 19th century stage.

Kleist is all but unknown in the English speaking world outside of academia, which is a shame–this is perhaps the result of lacking or lleist translations, although Kleist isn’t exactly easy to read in German either. The “Five Plays” edition from Martin Greenberg is very good. Del resto, scritto magistralmente. Since it’s a play, I read it out loud. This play turns the Trojan War story on its head: Action, some of it very violent, happens off-stage and is described by penthesliea.

Penthesilea, the Amazon queen and Achilles, the Greek hero, fall passionately in love but the play ends in the death of both. I also enjoyed the Sendak illustrations — pretty erotic, a change from children’s books, that’s for sure! L’unico popolo “matriarcale” in un mondo governato da uomini.

Uomini deboli e impauriti. Von Kleist, anima inquieta del romanticismo tedesco, capovolge la storia, modificandone profondamente il finale Kleist is an author who doesn’t do things by halves.

Whatever his characters feel, their feelings are absolute and ultimate. If they ever kleiat, they transform into mleist exact opposite. His protagonists pursuit their aims with a persistence verging on self-abandonment. The love story between Penthesilea and Achill, both warriors destined to kill each other, is extremely klest yet beautiful.

Their struggle with the rules of the society t Kleist is an author who doesn’t do things by halves. Their struggle with the rules of the society they’re living in is timeless and makes this play a classic worth reading any time and place. Apr 05, Morgana Blackrose rated it really liked it. Gorgeous illustrations, good translation but not perfect – k,eist few memorable lines quoted in the TV film ‘The Summer of Miss Forbes’ seem to be omitted, but the best you’ll get if you’re not fluent in classical literary German.
