In the if book, Kara the dragon-sayer is introduced as a sort of figure of legend. Fletcher did not let me down! But the good news is I haven’t outgrown them. Narrow, horn-covered windows striped the walls, shedding a dim, honeyed glow across a shifting tide of warriors and an undertow of dogs.

So we know all this going into the book, having read book 1, so maybe that’s what took some of the joy out of it. I know she winds up saving the dragons at the end, thr one of them at least comes around to her after she uses her hands to remove an arrow that pierces himbut I just flihht care.

Though Flight is told in first person, Fletcher’s ability to instantly make us aware of the sense and feeling of the book’s environment was actually a step-up from that in Dragon’s Milk.

She was flawed but as least occasionally exhibited some backbone and stood up for herself, though she was still obliged to fall in love by the end of the book, in order to have everything dragob with domestic bliss. Like in the first book of the series I enjoyed the strong female lead who grows from an outcast country girl even if her ddagon was a respected landholder to a well-respected, fight for what’s right heroine.

This book held my attention even more than Dragon’s Milk. You read the first book in a series and it mentions a character in passing, and you are always left wondering, who is that person and what did they do? As a result, she’s drafted into summoning the dragon. As well as being something of a creature of whim, Kara also seems a rather more passive character than Kaeldra, doubly odd given Fletcher’s project of avoiding non traditional fairy tale roles for o characters, indeed thw the one occasion Kara does attempt to strike out on her own she employs a ruse so obviously hackneyed it is almost laughable.

And all of the scenes — often fraught with awe-ful tension — of Kara moving among the wild dragons are vivid and convincing. I like that it’s different. Kara was a strong heroine, yet sh Books that are back-story, or prequels, are some of the most interesting things to read in my view.

There is a story about Kara and dragons. The kind of gift with strings attached. Learning the nuances of characterization and plotting as she went, Fletcher completed the manuscript and sent it to almost twenty publishers before it was accepted.
After Kara summons the dragon that once nursed her, she’s outraged and appalled when it’s killed. This book follows Dragon’s Milk which started it all. The story is well written and entertaining like the tale of Kara’s future Granddaughter Kaeldra, and Fletcher added a few little tid-bits that a careful reader could pick out to hint toward Kaeldra’s own story.
It is this passivity which makes the world of flight feel a far safer one than that found in Dragon’s Milk since Fletcher does not seem willing to have Kara taken or ordered or escorted somewhere and then run into something unpleasant because of it.
I really liked this book Whichever it is, the prose and the dialog are not quite as cringe-worthy, and the plot and characters are slightly more well-developed. For example, when first introduced to the King she initially plans to pretend she has no ability to call down birds and so force him to send her home, then suddenly due to feeling slighted changes her mind and decides she wishes to show off with a spectacular display.
