If you want to escape the two-dimensional hell of explanation that is the improper use of Powerpoint, this books and its two companions, provide safe passage to the promised land of clear, robust, graphical discourses of complex ideas. The amount of archival research that must have gone into this book is truly impressive: I think there’s a lot to learn about the art of visual explanation from it. Tufte argues that your inability to absorb this information is not your fault as a lay person but the fault of the creator who ineffectively conveyed his knowledge.

In graphics as in politics there was an attempt to impose order on systems that are essentially disorderly. The point is that presenting information meaningfully is challenging and takes real thought.
