A very worthwhile piece of book-length journalism. Tysons is a prime example of the future of edge cities and what other small towns all around the world could become. This book provided me with a much deeper understanding of what I edve so frequently growing up in the Dallas area. The concept of the Edge City is an intriguing, albeit very sad one – that a developer can do better in a matter of years what has taken proper cities decades. As with any city, edge cities go through phases of growth and redevelopment.
Nonetheless, if you’ve ever wondered why places like Irvine are there, and are so gross, this is a pretty good read. More importantly, however, is the data that Garreau compiles, and the trends he maps out.
For many individuals the interest with edge cities lies in what they can show about new trends across city regions. It also sports the largest and quite beautiful Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the country. Joel Garreau is the foremost chronicler of the biggest revolution in years in how koel build the cities that are the cornerstones, capstones and, sometimes, millstones of their civilizations — the places where most of our new wealth is being created.
