I suggest you ask Taylor Anderson. The Exeter took a major hit, and ordered the remaining four destroyers to leave the crippled cruiser. However, I would point out that LT Turner was a “mold breaker” and a force to be reconed with. They are so mindlessly violent, in fact, that it seems incredible they could even take the time to learn how to operate sailing ships.
Treat the book respectfully as destroyerken destroyerman treats the sea and his ship. I think Anderson did a good job of bringing in a “Hero” who’s Japanese in a way that makes him a respectable hero.
It’s all rather tricky, and the captain must maintain a balance of meeting all those various needs while falling in love himself with one of a tiny handful of female navy nurses who were on his destroyer at the time it crossed over.
Of course, I also think that most of them are just not memorable enough to stick around in my memory long enough. However, the Japanese forces closed range, and opened up on the small Allied fleet. It is the awesome start to a gripping series.
