Will Wright creator of the Sims and Spore is always an interesting guy, but his big thing–“Let’s make software that works as open-ended toys, not closed games,” to paraphrase–is tangentially related to interaction design, at best. Kind of boring, and not really useful to anyone looking for practical knowledge. Accompanying the book is a DVD that contains segments from all the interviews intercut with examples of the interactions under discussion. Part history lesson, part computer science thesis, part design education, part personal design philosophy, it is fascinating, inspirational, occasionally baffling, and often hilarious.
This book might be colossal, but if you take the time to read it, you’ll be doubly rewarded. But, time spent on them tended to be more biographical than relevant, focusing on how they got to where they were rather than what they DID that made them worth covering. Don’t Make Me Think, Revisited: You end up with a mucked soup. There isn’t much practical information here I bought this book thinking it would give examples and insight into product and interaction designs. All in all, I cannot recommend this book too highly: Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it onteractions, give it a second life.

While quite good as an historical text, Designing Interactions isn’t quite what the title advertises. While some chapters are more theoretical, and impart ideas about interaction design, others tell stories about how things came to be designed the way they were. Then it wouldn’t just be a history book of interaction design but something where learning could be integrated with the history.

The title of this book might suggest that it’s an introduction to the field of human-computer interaction HCI.

Interctions designed book, but maybe a little over-ambitious. Moggridge and his interviewees discuss such questions as why a personal computer has a window in a desktop, what made Palm’s handheld organizers so successful, what turns a game into a hobby, why Google is the search engine of choice, and why 30 million people in Japan choose the i-mode service for their cell phones.
So far I haven’t gained much insight into how to approach problems and not be horrible at this stuff. For someone looking to gain insight into the vision, models and approach of some of the greatest designers of our era, this is a wonderful keepsake. Essential, exciting, and desifning delight for both eyes and mind.

Bill Moggridge passes away in My new iMac doesn’t even have a Cd-rom reader. When it goes towards the more recent case studies, my favorite was the section about TUI, tangible user interfaces.
It was really interesting and informative about interactive design history and various case studies, even though it was totally different from what I expectation of an instructional moggridgs.
