This goes on for a third of the book without Abnett even making the slightest effort at developing even one character among the entire ensemble, thereby creating a huge waste of time. At the end of this battle, the Ghosts lost an excellent leader, Serg.

Abnett also has great conversations between the characters. This novel focuses on Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, leader of a sole surviving regiment from the planet of Tanith. He was not going to jeopardize the meaning behind the Crusade.

Those ones are fairly unusual for being semi-comedies set in the WH40K setting, whilst most of the rest of the books in the setting are play straight. There are a lot of characters, and the book is of modest length.
They are short in numbers. Think Band of Brothers but in space battling all kinds of nasty alien forces this is actually Derek Manus’ evaluation of the book, but i find it very apropos. The writing is solid and the characters are lush, though it’s a little confusing at first because a number of them have similar names and you meet about 40 characters during the book.
The first two-thirds or so of the book consist of short stories flashing back to key moments in the histories of individual soldiers within the Tanith First and also the unit as a whole, from Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt downwards in the rank structure. I think Abercrombie or Martinez are better at writing military science fiction because women are allowed to be in the military and allowed to be big players in the books.

Necropolis is a significant point in the series; at the end of the novel, the under-strength Tanith First receives an influx of replacement soldiers from the militia and general populace of Vervunhive.

Must redeem within 90 days. It wasn’t vulgar or anything but the usage of semi-archaic terms and knowledge of Dan Abnett has a particular talent for this kind of story and a lot to offer even those of us who are not really into the 40k universe. Now, from a very strict standpoint, the burning finger of accusation can be pointed ANYWHERE, but if we really hear Gaunt out in some of his situations he’s more guardsmen than son, and he is more brother than commissar.
Ibram Gaunt leapt down into the trench and broke the neck of the first Shriven he met with his descending boots. Dan creates the vocabulary we take for granted today almost Shakespearean style.
I was afraid I wouldn’t understand any of it and that the endless war would bore me, but I think Abnett does well with plotting. I mean, as a feminist I want female characters. The Guns of Tanith is where the Gaunt’s Ghosts series takes a much darker turn.
Perhaps being only around men for the rest of eternity is a rich existence and deeply satisfying, not the reason everyone is insane and constantly killing each other. Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt was one of the last people to leave the planet before its demise, and was saved by a youth called Brin Milo, whom he took with him in gratitude.
I didn’t get very far before I gave up.
