CONTEXTUAL DESIGN BEYER HOLTZBLATT PDF

Contextual design (CD) is a user-centered design process developed by Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt. It incorporates ethnographic methods for gathering. Karen Holtzblatt, Hugh Beyer, A tool supporting capture and analysis of field research data using the contextual design methodology, CHI ‘ The authors developed Contextual Design, the method discussed here, through their work with teams struggling to design products and internal systems.

The book was part of a class I took in Carnegie Mellon. It makes for a fascinating read.

Contextual design

Contextual inquiry is an explicit step for understanding who the customers really are and how they work on a day-to-day basis. If developers are not already using techniques like those presented here, they should read this book carefully to see what they are missing.

Holtzblatt’s initial work was a response to the limitations of usability testing and human factors work as it existed in the early ‘s. The resulting Contextual Design process was first used at DEC and later gained acceptance in the rapidly growing Human Computer Interaction HCI community throughout the ‘s, following the same heretic-to-accepted-practice trajectory that the HCI field itself was undergoing Caroll Ask questions and suggest interpretations of the user’s actions and motivations.

In Communications of the ACM36 10 pp. Get to Know Us. The thinking behind Contextual Design’s iterative prototyping evolved in conjunction with, and influenced, the development of participatory design techniques in the ‘s and ‘s Schuler and Namioka Paper prototyping develops rough mockups of the system using notes and hand drawn paper to represent windows, dialog boxes, buttons, menus, and the other user interface elements the customer will use.

Holtzblatt scaled down this method for software, using hand-drawn user interfaces on sticky notes to represent a proposed design and working through the user’s own tasks, in their own workplaces, to explore the usefulness of the design. Agile Software Development with Scrum.

Paper prototypes support iteration of the new system, keeping it true to the user needs. The book describes how, later in the process, software developers step back from the user data and do an “affinity,” which is an overall analysis of hundreds or even thousands of individual facts.

The structure that Contextual Design offers design teams helps bring some amount of control to this activity. It is like an active inquiry into the user’s world. Human Computer Interaction – brief intro. Team interpretation sessions bring a cross-functional design team together to hear the whole story of an interview and capture the insights and learning relevant to their design problem.

It shows how people are constrained and how they work around those constraints to make sure the work is done. In visioning, the team uses the consolidated data to drive conversations about how to improve users’ work by using technology to transform the work practice.

The UED also presents how the focus areas relate to each other and shows the links between focus areas.

The discussion is focused around a case study with colorful figures to illustrate the step-by-step process that students and those new to the topic will love. These initial parts are aimed at creating a structured representation of the users’ work practice that is actionable for design. Personas can help bring users alive and focus the stakeholders on the relevant issues, if they are built from rich contextual data. A lot conhextual times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.

Other processes may have similar investigative techniques, but the “pithiness” that engineers, business analysis, and marketing people usually associate with qualitative research disappears with this process.

WHAT IS CONTEXTUAL DESIGN?

PolanyiMichael And for many companies customers are a smelly and scary lot: Write a customer review. In practice, this means that researchers aggregate data from customers in the field where people are living and applying these findings into a final product. Learn more about our process. Read about our process in detail.

This is critical – paper prototype iterations ensure the team is developing the right design, that it is solving real user problems. This book introduces a customer-centered approach to business by showing how data gathered from people while they work can drive the definition of a product or process while supporting the needs of teams and their organizations.

Contextual Design is rooted in the observation that any technology or system is always situated in a larger environmental context – and that introduction of new solutions invariably changes the environment for its users.
