I’m debating reading Chernev’s book that I know is considered a classic by many Logical Chess.
A very modern table containing a comparison of the mobility of pieces in terms squares they could move to – chrenev I had seen in one of Dan Heisman’s books and thought it was a great invention.
When I left 2 years later, Chdrnev pawn was all anybody played. Okay, maybe not laugh out loud, belly laugh type material. If you ever feel like purchasing a chess book as a gift to a beginner, look no further.
Because there are few books aimed at beginners, but which will still entertain you as you get stronger. One reading will not suffice for mastery!

Would you believe me if I told you that a book that explains the thought process behind each and every move of 33 chess games was a page turner and often very funny? It seems that Nunn who is undoubtedly a stronger player than Chernev was is correct in his criticisms of certain instances of analysis in Chernev’s book, and also correct in pointing out that Chernev is sometimes too quick to dogmatically conclude an overarching general principle that doesn’t properly allow for exceptions.
As others have said as well, it is also a game of rules and exceptions. The section on the kingside attack was immediately applicable to my own games, and I adored the included Capablanca games. However, even the great Mikhail Tal read Logical Chess to brush up on fundamental principles. I played through this many years ago. Unfortunately, such misleading chess books are distressingly common. There are plenty of best practices ironed in with italics throughout the length of the book and the author is quite happy to present them, making exception however for his hero Capablanca.

Just by repeating the basic principles one already memorizes and adapts them easily and I caught chrnev looking at a position on the chess board in a different way.

Yes, all of these books are still included in my huge chess library. Many readers prefer to use a standard regulation board as the first board, and a much chenrev pocket-sized portable set as the second board. First, the analyses are sometimes not complete or contain slight errors. There’s only so much you logkcal say about 1. To develop strategical considerations — a long term plan when forcing tactics are not available — the learner should play through many annotated games that explain the reasoning behind the moves.
