A writer seeks a path through a dystopian city: The relations between human beings and animals are strikingly emphasized not through language but through face-to-face experience.
Set alongside the writer’s story is the story of the creation of the book itself. What gets my affection most, is that it doesn’t try too hard; you don’t feel the author trying to sound deep, or twisting and turning the form of the book out of insecurity.
Karasu worked in the foreign broadcast department of Radio Ankara until a Rockefeller University scholarship made it possible for him to Bilge Karasu — was born in Istanbul and became the pre-eminent Turkish modernist writer. Early pages I took to be surrealization of life under creeping authoritarianism, possibly that in the lead up to WWII, but Karasu, born inwould not have experienced that so directly.
