Essentially a book for those interested in studying sociology, but who aren’t doing it yet. Its main goal is to show how the lessons, concepts and theories sociologicallg sociology can be applied to daily life issues. As such, it is written in very general terms and superficially covers the work of many sociologists.
Thinking Sociologically the Bauman and May way
I found it boring and I think even the target audience won’t find it a very engaging reading because of the language: Sometimes the book hits it mark, for example, when explaining that thinking sociologically can be an antidote for many harmful attitudes by helping us understand other individuals and other groups, classes, cultures, etc. But it’s mostly boring. This book is especially interesting for readers without prior knowledge of sociology and will function as an eye opener.
Baumann knows how to convey his knowledge with passion. Even today, many of the theory and insights mentioned are relevant to today’s sociologlcally. I really enjoyed this easy to read book. It is a good reference introduction to his later work on the act of consuming in daily life and the effects of it on our culture: Please enjoy both books.
