A vividly rendered American story would do quite well at demonstrating the complexities of American experience, without the author constantly tapping readers on their shoulders to remind them how strange and fascinating American culture and people are.

Anshaw’s talent for evoking realistic female relationships and sharp, memorable dialogue is eclipsed by the novel’s overcalculated structure, which soon wears thin. This is what happens to Jessie, who at barely 18 experiences the defining moment of her life. The places where Jesse Austin’s life ends up couldn’t be more different, but the author does a good job of maintaining a consistent, but not identical, personality for the various manifestations her character. Want to Read saving…. Ok, giving it four stars because despite not being bowled over by it, I kept wanting to go back to it until it was done, ansha I don’t usually do as I am an easily distracted person.
She shows us that trauma casts long shadows that haunt us, until we find the courage to confront it, but don’t expect a neat, predictable ending here. I think that Anshaw is trying to demonstrate that there is more complexity at a tacky Florida tourist spot than the falsely cosmopolitan pick up on.

I can see how he liked the stance of a woman who is a champion swimmer and takes a dive into three different scenarios of how her life could have been.

Carol Anshaw does it beautifully in Aquamarinea story that begins with Olympic swimmer Jesse Austin, seduced and consequently edged out for a gold medal by her Australian rival, Marty. The self-conscious folksiness adds nothing. I can’t say anything more without giving away the story, but it was so well written, and the characters were so three dimensional, real, human I was hoping for more introspection, I suppose, instead of a just straight-forward “this is what happened without much reflection.
A enjoyable novel of the “what-if,” it follows the various paths a life can take.
