The main themes are the related ones of life, death, extreme longevity, faith, artificial intelligence, and the nature of reality. Reynolds loves his darkety dark dark darkness and a lot of that comes out in various displays absolutuon unnecessary sadism and bad attitudes and weirdly used adjectives.
The character who dominates the beginning of the novel basolution the series, Dan Sylveste, is daringly and bracingly unlikable. I feel like the mystique and wonder of the Inhibitors was executed perfectly in the first two books but in Absolution Gap they were just there too often. How does it all fit together?
While the first book focused on Ultras augmented humans living on trade ships, crusing lonely between the starsand the second book on Conjoiners hyperevolved humans living a hive-like society, not lonely at allthis book has a bit of everything, including surprising roles for the Pattern Jugglers an alien race that looks like sea weed and a pig bred for its organs. Still, it’s a testament to a good tale that I still think about them all alastait.

Quality-wise I think Absolution Gap is on par with Redemption Ark, but with the original cast gone, my favorite characters pointlessly dead, and zero focus on absolytion promised purpose of the series, I was bored. The best possible reason.

The Inhibitors motivations were explained in Redemption Ark, and even though that explanation fell a little flat, I was ok with it because I liked Skade alastaif much. I don’t want to say too much about the ending because I don’t want to hide behind the spoiler function in this review, but in essence I agree with other reviewers’ cries of “deus ex machina! Over the last ten weeks or so I have fallen in love with the Revelation Space universe and I simply can’t get enough of the stories or characters that occupy it.
At the end of Redemption Ark, one group of humans had taken refuge on the backwater planet of Ararat; one strand of Absolution Gap starts when the Inhibitors attack them.
